The importance of fasting: Bread and water on Wednesdays and Fridays, as requested by the Virgin Mary in Medjugorje 30 years ago. Jesus fasted for 40 days before undertaking his mission, to overcome evil.
Fasting has been a common practice in many civilizations throughout human history . Hippocrates and Plato, among others, praised the benefits of fasting. Paracelsus, in the 16th century, said that "fasting is the best remedy; it is the inner physician."

Formation, prayers and testimonies for fasting
The word Lent comes from the Latin “Quadragesima”, which means “forty”, referring to the 40 days of preparation for Easter.
Luke 4:1-2:
“Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert, where he spent 40 days being tempted by the devil.” 40 days in the desert. 40 days of struggle. 40 days of preparation before victory. Lent is not just a time of sacrifice. It is a spiritual battle.
In the Bible, the number 40 represents testing and purification.
• The Flood lasted 40 days → God cleansed the Earth.
• Moses fasted for 40 days on Sinai → He received the Law.
• The people of Israel wandered for 40 years in the desert → They were purified before the Promised Land.
• Elijah walked for 40 days to the mountain of God → He found His presence.
40 days prepare us for something big.
Jesus didn't need the desert... but we do.
Matthew 16:24: “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.”
Fasting is not just about abstaining from food. It's about mastering the body to strengthen the soul.
• Adam fell because of a desire for food. • Esau sold his birthright for a bowl of lentil stew. • Israel rebelled against God in the desert because they were hungry. Jesus overcame sin by fasting. We are called to do the same.
